I finally managed to get the kids Weekly Photo Blog to list the thumbnails yearly so that there are not so many on a page at one time. It took me a while to figure it out and in the end it was so simple.
I ended up using the categories as the year and then making a category archive and the archive page list the thumnails of each blog entry.
